Teaching the Future Progressive Tense in an Engaging Way
Teaching Ideas
The future progressive tense can be tricky for students to grasp, but teaching it doesn't have to be boring. With a little creativity, you can come up with interactive and engaging activities that will help your students master this grammar point while having fun along the way.
Idea #1: Future Progressive Charades
Get your students out of their seats with a round of future progressive charades! Divide students into teams and have one student from each team come up to act out a future progressive sentence while the rest of their team tries to guess. For example, a student could act out "I will be dancing" by doing some dance moves. Make it silly and let their creativity shine!
Idea #2: Crystal Ball Predictions
Bring in a crystal ball (or make one out of paper mâché), and have each student come up and make a prediction about what someone (a celebrity, character or classmate) will be doing in the future. "Beyonce will be performing at the Super Bowl next year" or "Spongebob will be making Krabby Patties."
Idea #3: Fortune Teller Activity
Make paper fortune tellers with your students and on the inside write different future progressive sentences. Students can take turns choosing numbers/colors to reveal the sentences. As a class, determine if the sentences are logical, funny or unlikely predictions.
Idea #4: Future Progressive Comics
Unleash your students' artistic side by having them create 3-panel comics that tell a story using the future progressive. Providing speech bubbles and panels on Padlet makes this organization easy. Display their hilarious comics around the classroom!
Idea #5: Future Progressive Board Race
In teams, have students compete in a board race using dice to move around the board. When landing on a square, they must create a logical future progressive sentence about what they will be doing in 5, 10 or 20 years. The first team to reach the finish wins!
